Dear Girlfriday,
I wanted to follow up with you on the status of your application for the position of [redacted]. Although we were impressed with your experience, we have decided to pursue other candidates that better match what we are seeking. Accordingly, you will not be considered further for this particular opportunity. Thank you for your interest and best wishes in your job search.

— Rejection I got today. I’ve been getting a lot of these since I started applying for jobs last spring, and I guess however you say it, the news is going to suck, but I thought this one was particularly mean. “We have decided to pursue other candidates that better match what we are seeking” is a hard sell when it’s an entry-level job and “what we are seeking” seems to add up to “people that are not you, and that we like better because they are not you.” And then “Accordingly, you will not be considered further for this particular opportunity.” just seems like beating a dead horse. But what do I know? I have to stop thinking about this stupid rejection. Of the four (four!) interviews I had scheduled last week, one rejected me before the week ended, one seems to have decided I wasn’t worth interviewing after I tried to reschedule because of snow, and the last two rejected me today. Am I complaining too much? Am I just wallowing in self-pity? Sorry.
